Position: Dual Language STEAM Academy Teacher (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) for 5th Grade

POSITION SUMMARY:

• Work collaboratively with the existing monolingual team
• Will be the teacher of record for a Dual Language cohort in all core content areas
• Co-teach with the STEAM Academy teacher for each content area
• Collaborate with the district curriculum specialists and others to organize and promote interdisciplinary STEAM activities by integrating successful strategies and multiple technologies
• Promote high-tech learning, which will help ensure students gain the necessary skills to compete and succeed in the global economy
• With an emphasis on the ongoing Dual Language Learning Framework, embedded STEAM instruction will strengthen content learning while utilizing technology to differentiate and enhance student learning

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education/Certification:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
• Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements or required training for subject and level
• 30 Initial Hours of GT training completed or will be completed within the first semester of the assignment
• Bilingual Certification 
• Demonstrated competency in all core academic subject areas assigned
• Meets the requirement of “highly qualified” as defined under the No Child Left Behind Act

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Proficient in both Spanish and English Language
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Dual Language Framework
• Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction in all content areas
• Ability to effectively instruct students and manage their behavior
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to support STEAM concepts with district curriculum along with monolingual teacher
• Ability to work collaboratively with others
• Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district curriculum and student needs and abilities
• Ability, both orally and in writing, to present information effectively and respond appropriately to questions and concerns from teachers, administrators, parents, and students
• Ability to integrate multiple facets of technology to enhance learning and instruction
• Ability to define and solve practical problems
• Ability to collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to use available information and develop realistic long-term and short-term action plans
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and parents
• Ability to perform duties with awareness of all local, state, and federal requirements

Experience:

• At least one year of teaching experience
• Experience with Dual Language Framework and Dual Language students and families
• Experience with delivering STEAM and/or project-based learning curriculum is preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

 

Instructional Strategies:

• Develop and implement plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required
• Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
• Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
• Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements
• Generate and engage community enthusiasm for STEAM programs 
• All other duties as assigned

• Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
• Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal assessment
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as approved/assigned by the campus principal
• Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of DISD

Classroom Management and Organization:

• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
• Manage student  behavior  in  accordance  with the Student  Code  of  Conduct  and  student  handbook
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities

Communication:

• Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
• Maintain a professional positive relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
• Use practical communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. 

Professional Growth and Development:

• Participate in staff development activities (may include summer, weekends, and after school) to improve job-related skills
• Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
• Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
