Campus: McAdams Junior High School    

 

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

 

Immediate Supervisor: Campus Principal

 

Pay Grade: Per Compensation Manual

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Teacher, under the supervision of the campus principal, will collaborate with the district curriculum specialists, and others to organize and promote interdisciplinary STEAM activities through the integration of successful strategies and multiple technologies to promote high-tech learning, which will help ensure students gain the necessary skills to compete and succeed in the global economy.
  • An emphasis during ongoing embedded STEAM instruction will be on strengthening content learning while utilizing technology to differentiate and enhance student learning.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required endorsements or required training for subject and level, assigned
  • 30 Initial Hours of GT training completed
  • ESL certification is required no later than March 15 of the first year (if certified) 

  • ESL certification is required no later than March 15 of the second year (if hired while in an alternative certification program)

  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned
  • Meets the requirement of “highly qualified” as defined under the No Child Left Behind Act

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical manuals, textbooks, and other instructional resources
  • Ability to write reports and general correspondence
  • Ability, both orally and in writing, to present information effectively and respond appropriately to questions and concerns from teachers, administrators, parents, students, and the general public
  • Ability to always communicate using correct grammar
  • Ability to integrate multiple facets of technology to enhance learning and instruction
  • Ability to define and solve practical problems
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to use available information and develop realistic long-term and short-term action plans
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and parents
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all state and federal requirements

Experience:

  • At least one year of teaching experience
  • Experience with delivering a STEAM-rich curriculum with robotics and other projects preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

 

Instructional Strategies:

  • Develop and implement plans that fulfill the requirements of the district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required
  • Deliver STEAM-oriented instruction (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through Project-Based Learning methods
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles
  • Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
  • Conduct an assessment  of  student  learning  styles  and  use  results  to  plan  instructional activities
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements
  • Generate and engage community enthusiasm for STEAM programs 
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides and/or volunteers
  • Alternative methods of instruction
  • All other duties as assigned

Student Growth and Development:

  • Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal assessment
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as approved/assigned by the campus principal
  • Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of DISD

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
  • Manage student  behavior  in  accordance  with the Student  Code  of  Conduct  and  student  handbook
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials

Communication:

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly

Professional Growth and Development:

  • Participate in staff development activities (summer, weekends, and after school) to improve job-related skills
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
